Feeding the Hungry This Holiday Season Thanks to #LightTheWorld Campaign

This holiday season, I volunteered to participate in the #LightTheWorld campaign by Mormons.org. The theme is to "Feed the Hungry" and it's up to us to decide how we plan the event. I personally suck at planning events, so I simply did what I thought was best - to buy the food myself and hand them out to those in need. I wanted to make it as simple, but meaningful as possible.

Feed the Hungry

Day one. For the first day, I decided to order 50 burgers from a popular fast food store in our area and then I plan to give them out to the street children in our neighborhood.

We spotted the area where the kids usually go to and that's where we handed the burgers. I don't want it to become similar to a political event like having banners with my name on it and then having a ceremony, no. I just wanted to give food and make them happy. After giving them food, this is the result: genuine smiles.

The kids after getting their free burgers. The others were too shy to be included in the picture. Their smiles are really amazing.

Day two. I bought some groceries such as noodles, rice, eggs, canned goods, coffee, toiletries, and more to be donated to St. Rita Orphanage in Paranaque, Metro Manila.

#LightTheWorld
I also made sure to bring my family along especially the kids for them to know what impact giving could do to other people.
I wanted it to be a surprise so we simply went to the place and handed the goods. The orphanage is a non-government organization that currently houses 25-30 orphans. They do not receive government funding so they rely solely on donations, which is why I decided to help them out this holiday season.

We arrived one rainy afternoon at around 4pm. The kids were having a simple party hosted by a 3rd party organization. When we arrived, we briefly introduced ourselves to one of their volunteers. We met sister Esmeralda, the person-in-charge of the organization. When she saw us and heard our cause, we saw how happy and how sincerely thankful she was. When I saw her reaction (I really wished we were able to video it), I was almost teary-eyed. At that moment, I was truly glad and thankful I participated in #LightTheWorld campaign because I was able to see and feel what giving could do to you and it feels so wonderful.

A visit to St. Rita Orphanage
Day 2: Visit to the Orphanage
We're not allowed to take pictures of the kids, but here's a picture of my family with sister Esmeralda. Our meeting was very brief because she also needs to tend to her other guests, which is totally fine. I do intend to come back soon and hopefully get an interview. If you want to help out, you may check their website at http://www.saintritaorphanage.ph/

Day Three. I'm not even sure if I have to put this here, but I did anyway. On the 3rd day, since I still have a few bucks left on my budget, I decided to buy some cat food for the stray cats in our village. I see them go in our neighbor's trash every day to look for food, so today I decided to give them some proper cat food. They're quite easy to lure actually. Just leave food in a bowl and they'll eventually come. The bag is enough for a few days of feeding so I hope to make them full for the holidays.

Day 3: Feed the Animals.
So that's my 30-day story of doing something for others. I have to say it has been the highlight of my holidays. I guess I have reached a point in my life where I easily get overwhelmed with the simple things I do to others. The feeling is incomparable.

This concludes my #LightTheWorld campaign. God bless Mormons.org for letting us participate in such a great program. You really have lifted my soul.

Places to Go in Jacksonville, Florida

Florida is one the best places to go in the United States if you're longing for beautiful beaches; scenic views; and a wonderful time with family, friends, or even yourself.

The beaches in Jacksonville are quite popular with locals. With so many beaches to choose from, some say that if you love being on the water, Jacksonville is definitely for you. Right now, I don't want to focus on the beaches. Instead, I want to focus more on the other highlights of Jacksonville. Here are some of them:

EverBank Field

Aside from the beaches, one fun fact about Jacksonville is that its EverBank Field, home of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL), is the only American football stadium that is known to have a swimming pool. It was amazing for me to learn that viewers can choose to enjoy the pool and watch their favorite game at the same time. I bet that makes for one awesome pool party before, during, and after Jaguars games.

The Annual Filipino Bloggers' Network Christmas Party 2017

Now in its fifth year, the annual Get-Together & Christmas party of the Filipino Bloggers Network (FBN) has become bigger and brighter with more sponsors and partners giving their support to one of the most active blogger groups in the country today.

Have a Happy Holidays with Svelt’i

It is indeed the most wonderful time of the year. From frenzied last-minute shopping sprees to multiple Christmas parties, we really can’t deny that the holidays are just around the corner. But, despite all the infectious merriment that the holidays bring, we also cannot deny the fact that all the stress the holiday season brings can absolutely take a toll on your skin with all the late-night partying, non-stop eating, and mad traffic we all have to deal with.

Gifts You Should Never Give Your Girl

Choosing a perfect gift that will be able to tell your beloved person about your true feelings is tricky enough, especially on the holiday’s period.

People come with high expectations, but the final result may be extremely unsatisfactory. However, as you browse the shelves of every store that happens on your path through the mall and rack your brain for some original ideas, there are a few things that should never make their way into your girl’s gift territory and now we’re happy to share this unique knowledge with you! Visiting our Blog you can find many interesting answers to such questions.

1. Soft toys
A teddy bear may look like a lovely idea if you’ve got only one shopping day (or even less) at your disposal and you are already too desperate and confused, but keep this simple rule in mind: if your eight-year-old sister would like it, confidently scratch this idea off your list. Although many women appreciate sweet and adorable gifts, anything associated with furry toys or pink heart-shaped photo frames just won’t fully do their job to impress your princess. Grown-ups present spa treatment certificates and shiny trifles in jewelry boxes.

2. Apparel
Wonder why your girlfriend literally lives in the mall, spending numerous hours for shopping? With all the offerings - sizes, colors, and fabrics, God knows what else! Even she has trouble finding clothes she actually likes. So, what makes you suppose you’re going to score that 3-pointer and fit right well with that red dress? You definitely do not wish to be in hot water when presenting her a jumper that’s almost two sizes larger or just completely not her style. That’s why any piece of clothes is one of those gifts you should never give your girlfriend. You’d better play it safe and a buy a gift card to her favorite store.

3. Men-themed items
Want her to share your passion for fishing? You won’t tempt her by gifting a box of bows or even a Japanese spinning. Just because she’ll get the gear for your favorite hobby, doesn’t mean she will suddenly demonstrate an interest in it. Same goes for tickets to sporting events, because, you know, watching a football match with you will hardly make her a sports fan. Those are some really bad gift ideas. If you are possessed with an idea of a gift that involves some activity, get your hands on tickets to a concert of her favorite artist. Spend a night singing with her to Justin Bieber and watch how fast you rise in rank in your relationship.

4. Supplies for cooking
Do you think getting her a skillet, a blender or a waffle iron will make you look like a superhero in her eyes? Nah, buddy. Not even close. On the one hand, it’s practical, no doubt. But on the other - will it make her jump for joy? Not likely. Not to mention there’s a direct implication for her to go and make you a dinner. Only one way some minor kitchenware can be at least a little presentable - if it’s owned by her favorite world-class chef.

5. Gym membership
Yup, a membership card to a fitness club is in the list of the gifts you should never give your girlfriend. Among the cookies and holiday cakes, diets are usually being blown left and right. So, gifting your sweetheart a gym membership can be seen as an unspoken ascertaining of the fact she’s out of shape. After all, women are super sensitive about their bodies. So, if she wasn’t planning to go working out in a gym, you’d better throw away such “gift”.

6. Stationery
Unless that pen is made of solid rose gold or the notebook is leather-bound with a signature of a Mr. Big Shot, then avoid giving office supplies as gifts. No girl wants to unwrap a Christmas present and find a Hello Kitty spiral notepad with a $1.50 pen coming with it, no matter what color they are.

L'oreal Paris Sparkling Visible Color in Golden Nude Brown

I have never used any hair coloring ingredient on my hair - ever! I was always scared of the result. I remember that one episode from the cartoon, Anne of Green Gables, where she colored her hair green and it destroyed her hair so she ended up cutting it short. After watching that episode when I was young made me avoid all hair coloring chemicals altogether.

But now that I'm 35 years old, I'm more open to anything new. To start my very first hair coloring journey, I decided to try out L'oreal Paris Sparkling Visible Color in Golden Nude Brown.

L'oreal actually has 2 types of brown hair coloring, the Golden Nude Brown and the Ashy Nude Brown. Here's a guide that can help you choose which color that suits your skin tone:

How I Learned The Numbers in My Childhood

When I was in nursery school or probably in kindergarten, I remember that’s when I learned the most basic numbers from one to ten, and probably up to 20. Then I started having a hard time dealing with numbers that are greater than 20 for some reason. Having a tutor back then is not a popular idea back in the day and it costs a lot, so I didn't have any. But there are some things that helped me cope with the difficulty and eventually overcome it.

Learning Numbers Through Games

Image from Flickr  by Lalney Powell
When I was around 7 years old, that’s when things started to get interesting. I remember my great-grandmother who visited us from Bohol taught me how to play bingo in our home in Batangas. It didn’t spark my interest at the moment, but since I was also bored, I just went along with it. She put out the bingo box that was stored on a shelf and we started to play. She taught me what the white circular plastics with numbers are for and we should follow a certain pattern on a card, and whoever gets the pattern first wins.

It was quite memorable for me because bingo also helped me familiarize higher numbers from twenty and up unexpectedly. As I said, I was never good at numbers when I was a child, but I guess playing the bingo game every day by looking at the numbers on the card and wanting to win got my senses excited that made me want to learn all the numbers.

Then when I reached 2nd grade, I started having my own milk money for school. I started having 20 pesos daily. So in that budget, I can already buy a glass of orange juice, a ham and cheese sandwich, and candies/chips for the loose change. Wow, just thinking back made me realize that 20 pesos is more than enough to make me happy during recess time. I didn’t have to worry about my transportation just yet because I had a school bus. So at that time, I unknowingly memorized the prices of the items that I  buy every day so it was also good exercise with numbers in memory.

10-20 game
Lastly, the game called “10-20” was very popular when I was young. It’s a game where we use a long garter tied in an oblong shape, then both ends of the oblong is placed on the waist of  two kids standing up parallel to each other with about a meter in between, and then one player would jump on the garter with a certain pattern counting from 10-20-30-40-50-60-70-80-90; a very good practice for the line of 10’s.

So far, that’s what I have done during my childhood that helped me with numbers. Well, I’m not a Mathematician nor an engineer, but I just thought my post could give you some thoughts on how to spark your kids’ interest in numbers without hiring a tutor. You know what they say, the best teacher in life is experience.
