Security in Distance Learning

Distance Learning (Image from Unsplash)
Image from Unsplash
Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, schools around the world were forced to practice distance learning to keep the students safe and confined in their homes. Sites like Scrum Institute, Udemy, and Harvard University has been practicing distance learning for a quite some time so they must have a strong framework to support it. Since most of educational institutions are simply forced to distance learning, a lot of them are still struggling to this digital transformation. Educators need to revise and build the content for their courses that’s suited online, as well as build the distance learning infrastructure needed to ensure all of their faculty and students have remote access to this content. The challenge they face is how to do this at scale and do it securely?

Just like the real world, the cyber world or the internet is filled with malicious users and cyber criminals who are fully aware that for many educational organizations, distance learning is uncharted waters. Educational institutions have long been a target by adversaries. According to the 2019 Verizon Data Breach Report, education continues to be plagued by human errors, social engineering, and denial of service attacks. And these changes only compound these challenges.

The conversion to distance learning has improved the online security risk for institutions and created potential opportunities for criminals. Essential information are their targets such as stealing personal and financial information, intellectual property, or simply be disruptive.

Secured Learning Environment

There are several simple steps every educational institution or any other institution needs to consider if they want to set up and maintain an effective distance learning environment.  These include the following:

Protect Web Applications

Exploiting vulnerabilities in applications is the easiest way for an attacker to breach your network. You must scan external sites for security flaws such as cross-site scripting errors and SQL injections. And it’s equally important to encrypt the traffic between your learning systems and your users, whether faculty, students, or administrators, so information can’t be stolen in transit.

Provide Strong Authentication

It is essential to enforce strong password policies (i.e., complexity, length, and expiration), enforce account lockout after failed attempts to prevent password guessing, and leverage multi-factor authentication where possible to prevent the misuse of stolen passwords. I believe this is where captcha comes in and other similar security measures.

Leverage Network Segmentation

Another way to secure your environment is to segment or separate your internet-facing teaching applications from your other internal applications, such as your HR system, Accounting, etc. This way, if a breach or malware outbreak were to occur, the scope of impact will be limited.

Manage 3rd Party Risk

The third-party technologies that you use in your online learning environments can pose additional vulnerabilities and risk to your enterprise network. Whether it’s your learning management system or teleconferencing tools (e.g. Zoom, Skype, etc.), regardless of whether they are hosted in the cloud or on-premise, you need to ensure you perform a thorough security assessment of the vendor and their products before introducing them into your network environment.

Monitor for Malicious or Unusual Activities

Organizations new to implementing distant learning will see a significant increase in devices and external network traffic connecting to their networks. The security staff needs to be aware of any unusual login attempts, unexplainable large data transfers, or other behaviors that seem out of the norm. This job usually falls under the network manager’s responsibility or his/her minions.

As we engage in distance learning, we need to ensure that we practice cyber distancing to protect ourselves from malicious users. In order to maintain order and take control, it's strongly recommended to follow these standard security practices to effectively move us into this new distance learning norm.

Just to give you some tips, here are some reliable distance learning websites I found (you may search Google about their websites):
  • International Scrum Institute
  • Maryville University
  • Harvard University
  • Udemy.com
  • Coursera

Sustainable Energy in My Neighborhood

Sustainable energy has been a hot topic ever since global warming has become a problem. Countries all over the world has started developing sustainable energy that people can use that also wouldn’t harm the environment. In the United States, people like Douglas Healy strongly promotes sustainable energy be practiced in their country. Here in the Philippines, development of sustainable energy is still young, but I'm still glad to say we have already begun.

A Peek About What is Data and Its Importance

The importance of data has proven its worth in today’s digital age especially in the fields of ecommerce, business, or almost anyone who uses a computer. Business leaders nowadays heavily rely on their gathered data to make better decisions for their company in terms of profit.  Data collection used such as phone surveys, email marketing, or even people-to-people meet ups on malls are essential for the business to learn more about their customers’ wants and needs.  Whatever the method, most data had to be collected manually for businesses to understand their customers and market better. Because of the financial cost, time, difficulty of execution, and more associated with data collection, many companies operated with limited data.

I personally sometimes participate in online surveys that companies hire to get data from people. Surveys would often ask about job, income, what products you have bought in the last 6 months or so, and sometimes they would show a video of their newly-made commercial and you input your thoughts, reactions, first impressions about it. I really thought it was cool to participate in one of those once in a while, but getting them done every month is quite tiresome.

Data and Databases

As I am writing this article, I instantly use data when I save this article in my computer. Its data consist of the date I made it, the author’s name, etc. It’s the same with business. Any business with a website, a social media account, an online form that accepts electronic payments of some form, etc., has data about customers, user experience, web traffic, and more. All that data is filled with potential if you can learn to utilize it to improve your business.

Data that has been given by a customer will be stored in a place called a database. There are different types of databases. There are small databases used for simple data storage for single users and there are big databases that store huge amounts of data and information from big businesses or commercial vendors such as in ecommerce websites, financial institutions with banking features, and more.

Big companies or enterprises need big databases to store information that is not open to the public such as employee records, company files, contracts, and more. Master data is typically shared by multiple users and groups across an organization and stored on different systems. Databases such as Microsoft’s SQL uses master data services which is Microsoft’s solution for managing master data.

Data is Good for the Environment, Too

Data is not only limited to enterprises and big companies. Did you know that the waste and recycling industry stands to benefit from utilizing data as well?  For developed countries, the use of data allows for garbage trucks to determine the best route to take, which not only reduces emissions but increases operational efficiency as well. This is really beneficial to all countries and I hope more truck companies would consider using it. I have to admit, the utilization of data seems to be in the early stages of the waste and recycling industries. I just hope that data systems can one day expand to improve recycling rates.

Tips To Achieve A Great Food Photo

I am not a professional photographer. I never took photography lessons or any course in that regard. I just don't have the money and time for it, but one thing is certain - I do love taking pictures no matter what camera or phone I use, most especially food pictures.

Being a blogger, it has become a habit of mine to take food pictures from the restaurants we visited. Here are some food photos used in this blog:
