All About Shapewear

I believe despite the COVID-19 pandemic, women still need shape wears especially those who gave birth or simply those who want to enhance the shape of their body’s natural curves. I remember Bridget Jones’ shapewear from the movie, Bridget Jones’ Diary whenever shape wear was the topic of the conversation. Though shape wear is not new to me because my mom also uses it, I’m now just starting to appreciate its benefits to my body since I’m nearing my 40s.

Room and Butler: Professional Skin Clinic for the Modern Man

Skin and body health goes hand in hand. How so? For one, skin is the body’s first layer of defense. It is also the biggest organ of a human. Ultimately, skin is the first to give us clues on the status of our body’s overall health. For example, we get a skin rash when we ate something that does not mix well with our stomach or our immune system. Convinced yet? In many ways than one, our skin is our body’s protection. According to NIH Dermatologist Dr. Heidi Kong, skin provides a barrier for our body against bacteria and different other environmental hazards which can be dangerous for human health.

A Simple Lola Remedios Review

I  keep seeing the ad of Lola Remedios at home and I got curious as to what the product is actually for. The ad also said that if you feel “nilalamig” or a chill in your body and you’re feeling weak, this is the product you should drink. It caught my interest because I am one of those people who experiences the “chill” feeling especially during my hormonal imbalance that usually happens in-between periods. As a result, I bought one sachet to try it out.

Here’s a 2021 Mantra: Finally Breaking Free from Itch

Finally Breaking Free from Itch. Yes, I Can

2020 has revealed a lot of things that most people haven’t given much attention to before. It’s crazy how from one year you never knew you’ve been embarrassing yourself in front of people by just scratching your scalp repeatedly because of scalp itch and dandruff. Now, we have a name for this – itch-uations. How does it feel to finally be in terms with the fact that you’ve been having itch-uations even before it was a thing? Embarrassing, right?

Constantly Tired? You May Be Experiencing A Case of Iron Deficiency Anemia

What happens to your performance and immunity when your Iron-deficient

Productive people have one thing in common, they ward off feelings of constant exhaustion and drowsiness thinking these are just the result of their hectic lifestyles. They carry on with day-to-day activities even when they experience the inability to focus and perform and not realizing that this might be a symptom of Iron Deficiency Anemia. I am personally guilty of this simply because I need quotas to finish and deadlines to meet.

Iron deficiency anemia happens when your blood has lower amount of red blood cells or hemoglobin  than  normal.1  This  can  cause  you  to  feel  weak,  tired,  dizzy,  look  pale,  and experience headaches. People with chronic medical conditions, women in the reproductive age group and those who experience heavy menstrual bleeding are most vulnerable in having anemia. While those who are not able to maintain a healthy lifestyle are also at risk.

How to prevent Iron Deficiency Anemia?

The people who have higher risk to have iron deficiency anemia are women in the reproductive age group and those who experience heavy menstrual bleeding; athletes in endurance sports and high-altitude training that require the body with more red blood cells; and those with pre-existing chronic diseases. 2

A change in diet and nutrition comes as the first step. This can include choosing food with high iron content like poultry, meat, and seafood. Eating food rich in Vitamin C like fruits and dark green leafy vegetables can help enhance iron absorption.

For people with erratic schedules, managing a diet can pose as a challenge. Taking Multivitamins+Minerals (Sangobion IRON+) can help keep iron deficiency anemia away as it helps the body get the nutrients and minerals it needs.

Multivitamins + Minerals (Sangobion IRON+) is an iron supplement with vitamins and minerals that helps replenish iron stores and increase red blood cell levels in the body.3 It has ferrous gluconate, a type of iron salt which has better absorption in the body, Folic acid, and vitamin B12, which are vital for production of red blood cells. It also contains Vitamin C which helps improve iron absorption, and Copper sulphate and manganese sulphate that helps in the metabolic processes of blood cell production.

How Iron sufficiency plays a part in maintaining strong immunity

Micronutrients have an important role in regulating immune function, metabolism, and enzymes. Iron is an essential micronutrient that is needed by the enzymes to help maintain body immunity which can help protect the body against infection.

There are certain enzymes in white blood cells that are affected by the iron levels in the body. So, when Iron is deficient, the levels of enzymes in white blood cells are also reduced, and this can affect the body’s ability to fight off infections.

When you live an action-packed lifestyle, even when you’re just working from home but juggling multiple responsibilities, do not ignore the constant feeling of exhaustion. Fulfilling your daily intake of Iron can help support your body as you go through your daily activities.

Maintaining a healthy and nutritious diet, practicing various exercises, and taking Multivitamins+Minerals (Sangobion IRON+) which acts as an iron supplement, can help manage symptoms or prevent Iron Deficiency Anemia.4

If symptoms persist, consult your doctor.

Shapewear for All Types of Women

Shapewears are beginning to become popular to women in all walks in life in the hopes of achieving a better body shape. It’s good news, too, that there are also plenty of available sizes for plus size women in my previous post.

Bio-Fit Plus: The Complete Multivitamins

Vitamins are essential nowadays especially now that there's a pandemic. We have to strengthen our immune system by eating nutritious foods, exercise, and good amount of sunlight. But because of the pandemic, my kids cannot get outside and since both of my kids are picky eaters, they lack the vitamins they need from what they eat so they really need food supplements to "supplement" them with their nutrition requirements.

My kids used to take two vitamins separate vitamin syrups; one for ascorbic acid and zinc, and the other is for vitamin B, iron, and other vitamin essentials. It's actually a bit expensive buying separate bottles. But thanks to Bio-Fit Plus food supplement syrup, I don't need to buy separate bottles of vitamins anymore because Bio-Fit Plus is already complete with Vitamins A, C, B Vitamins, D, E, Lysine, Taurine, and Chlorella among others. Just one teaspoon of this baby and my kid is good to go.

Cold Season

True Story: My two kids suffered from colds last week. There are no recommended cure for colds, but rest and lots of fluids. But our pediatrician said to continue their vitamins even when they're sick so I was lucky because the time we got our Bio-Fit vitamins was their first day of having a cold. I simply followed the one-teaspoon-per-day instruction for my kids.

I'm not sure if it's because of the vitamins or not, but even if they had colds, they never skipped a meal. Normally when they have colds, even me,  they usually skip meals because they don't have the appetite, so I'm quite thankful that they still ate their food on time. I guess that's why on the 3rd day, I noticed significant improvement to their health; their noses weren't clogged anymore and their colds didn't turn into coughs. I'm not saying the vitamins did it because I have no direct proof that it did, but I'm just glad they didn't have coughs from their colds.

When is Best Time To Take Vitamins

While I was doing some window shopping inside Mercury Drug, a saleslady was there promoting some vitamins. I forgot what vitamins that was, but I remembered one thing that she said to me. She said that vitamins are more effective when kids drink them before they sleep. I was quite confused because usually in commercials or TV shows, we see kids drinking vitamins after eating their breakfast or lunch. So I did a little research to confirm this.

From an article in Washington Post, according to Jeffrey Blumberg, a professor of nutrition science and policy at Tufts University in Boston, he suggests taking your dietary supplements at night isn’t advisable. “Digestion slows down during sleep, so taking your nutrient supplement late at night would not be associated with an efficient absorption.”

So given that there are multiple sources saying vitamins are best to take during daytime and/or night time, it's best to ask your pediatrician when is the best time to take your children's vitamins. Just out of curiosity, the kids take them during night time, but I make sure that their tummies are full before taking the vitamins. I heard no complains whether they feel any discomfort or pain. Sleeping time was not a problem also because they easily fall asleep when it's bedtime.

Staying Safe from COVID-19: Basic Protective Measures Against the New Corona Virus

It’s no secret that people are scared of the current Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) outbreak, previously known as Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Some even resorted to believing some misconceptions such as eating bananas or drinking vodka claiming that it can help them avoid contracting it.

The outbreak has now affected 81 countries, including China where the new Corona virus strain, which has not been previously identified in humans, was first recorded. In the Philippines, there are currently 204 new cases as of today that are identified as positive carriers of the said virus.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), clustering pneumonia cases of unknown etiology was reported in Wuhan, China, last December 2019—this signaled the start of the outbreak, which has since spread globally, affecting more than 94,0000 individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19.

In outbreak situations like this, the saying, "prevention is better than cure," becomes relevant more than ever. But, what should you do to protect yourself and the others against the disease?

Citing the WHO and DOH advisories, Sante, a provider of premier organic health and wellness products and services, lists down the basic preventive measures you should know and more importantly practice, amid the COVID-19 outbreak:

Practice Frequent and Proper Hand Washing

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to eliminate the virus if it is on your hands. It also important that you know how to properly wash your hands. You may also use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if your hands are not visibly dirty.

Observe Proper Cough Etiquette

When coughing and sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Don’t forget to discard the tissue once you use it and wash your hands after or disinfect with alcohol or hand sanitizer. In the absence of this, cover your mouth and nose with a flexed elbow.

By doing so, you can prevent the spread of germs and viruses, especially when you use your bare hands, you may contaminate objects or even the people you touch.

Avoid Touching Eyes, Nose and Mouth

Our hands touch many surfaces, which might be contaminated with the virus. If you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with your contaminated hands, you might transfer the virus from the surface to yourself. Should you need to touch any part of your face, make sure to wash your hands before doing so.

Maintain Social Distance

If possible, maintain at least a meter (3 feet) distance away from other people, particularly those who are coughing, sneezing, and with a fever. When someone infected with respiratory diseases coughs or sneezes, that person projects small droplets containing the virus. If you are too close, you might breathe in the virus.

Avoid Unprotected Contact with Farm or Wild Animals

As a general precaution, you should practice general hygiene measures when visiting live animal markets, wet markets, or animal product markets.

When you go to these places, make sure that you sanitize or wash your hands with soap and water after touching the animals and animal products. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. If there are sick animals or spoiled animal products, avoid close contact with them.

Any contact with other animals in the market, such as stray cats and dogs, rodents, birds, cows, pigs goats and bats, should also be avoided, including the potentially contaminated animal waste or fluids on the soil or structures of shops and market facilities.

Cook Food Thoroughly

Per good food safety practices, you must handle raw meat, milk, or animal organs with care to avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods. It also pays to ensure that all your meals are well-cooked.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

While in the flu season, you need to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. Aside from a well-balanced diet and regular exercise, it also pays to take vitamins and food supplements to boost your immune system. This is what Santé has been promoting to help everyone to live more and do more in life.

I Had My Impacted Wisdom Tooth Removed: Did It Hurt?

I hate dentists. Well, it's not that I hate them, I'm just afraid of having an oral surgery because the word, surgery, scares me. I always thought that the procedure would really hurt (according to the movies I've seen) which is why I'm scared of them.

My first wisdom tooth started to come out during my college days and I had no problem with it initially. It just went out perfectly. Until now, it still functions normally as my molar's assistant in terms of grinding food. The problem is my second wisdom tooth that appeared during my 20s on the left side of my gums. It was really painful while it was growing, but since I didn't have the money nor the resources to go to the dentist, I just took some pain killers and waited for the pain to go away. The pain did went away after a few days so I just ignored the said tooth thinking that it will all be okay.

QUITTERS ARE WINNERS: Are Your Habits Increasing Your Cancer Risk?

Photo by dylan nolte on Unsplash
I used to have family members who would smoke at least 2 cigarettes a day. It's either they were stressed or they need it to help with their digestion. Sometimes, it's out of peer pressure especially if you're working in the call center industry. Thankfully, they all eventually quit even before having any side effects.

If you have a cigarette smoking habit, think twice about taking another puff: tobacco use is the most important  risk  factor  for  cancer,  responsible  for  around  12%  of  cancer deaths based on the Globocan 2018 data. Among the different types of cancer, the one that affects the lung is the most common cause of cancer mortality at an estimated
1.76 million deaths globally.

Do you fall into #MalnutritionTraps?

The country has been facing the rise on the number of underweight and overweight Filipinos for more than 20 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined this phenomenon as the “Double Burden of Malnutrition” or the “prevalence of both under nutrition and overweight in the same community, nation, or region.”

To address this problem, our government launched the PinggangPinoy® campaign in 2014. PinggangPinoy® is an easy-to-understand food guide showing proper food group portioning on a per-meal basis. This reflects the principles of MOderation, VAriety and BAlance (MOVABA) to promote healthier eating habits.

Solving the Philippines’ Double Burden of Malnutrition should be a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors as it is not an easy feat. With this, Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation partnered with government agencies to conduct education programs to raise awareness and promote the practice of Pinggang Pinoy® in malnutrition hotspots, where incidences of Double Burden Malnutrition are high. This training was given to homemakers/mothers who have malnourished (underweight, stunting, wasting, overweight and obese) school-aged children.

The pilot run resulted to improvements of the knowledge & attitudes of households related to the practice of Pinggang Pinoy® within target areas. However, behavior changes towards healthier eating habits remains to be a challenge. The program uncovered a number #MalnutritionTraps that some Pinoy households easily fall into. The following #MalnutritionTrapsprovide a picture of how unhealthy eating habits may lead to Double Burden of Malnutrition:

1. Over consumption of carbohydrates: Voracious rice eaters can easily fill half of their plates with rice. Others have pandesal & noodles as regular meal deprived of other nutrients derived from a well-balanced meal.
2. Under consumption of vegetables and/fruits: It is common for some to be content with rice & meat to satisfy their hunger and skip/take insufficient amount of vegetables/fruits.Fact is, the variety of colors found in Glow foods are important sources of vitamins & minerals to sustain our energy &keep us from getting sick.
3. Overconsumption of protein: Typical Filipino “SILOG” meals include double serving of proteins (e.g. Tapa+Itlog, Tocino+Itlog, Longanisa+Itlog, Bangus+Itlog). Eating different kinds of protein is fine for as long as they are taken in moderation. We must also avoid protein dishes served high in fat, cholesterol and sodium.
