We Bought General's Lechon for My Sister's Birthday

I am not personally a fan of lechon or roasted pork because the last time I tasted lechon was back when I was a kid and I remember it tasted bland and the skin was a bit elastic like rubber which was also tasteless. Ever since then, it has been clueless to me why Filipinos love lechon for special occasions.

Yesterday was my sister's 41st birthday and she wanted to have lechon to celebrate the occasion. Luckily, another sister of ours is generous enough to sponsor the lechon because we've been talking about having one in our home for 5 years now. Lechon is very expensive so it takes thorough budget planning if you really want to have one.

This is very easy to make and convenient to bring along to the office or school (once the pandemic is over) because you can simply put it in a container without mess. It's oil-free, too, because there's no oil used.

Chocolate Mousse: Inspired by Nancy Drew's Midnight in Salem Mystery Game

Do you like mysteries and detective stories? Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem is just the right game for you! Games like these is like a breath of fresh air for those who wanted to focus more on solving mysteries and using their mind (and imagination) to solve a case - just like a detective :)

Game Story

Nancy Drew unexpectedly finds herself in Salem, Massachusetts investigating an arson on the Hathorne estate. The Hathorne House was originally constructed by Judge John Hathorne, inquisitor of the infamous Salem witch trials and the final home to 102-year-old Frances Tuttle, his last direct descendant. When Tuttle passed away, the estate became city property and while the mayor was seeking a manager to oversee the estate the home burst into flames. The ongoing investigation has turned up little evidence but concerned citizens have accused Mei Parry of arson and are pressuring the police to arrest the secretive teenager. As Nancy races to uncover the truth behind the arson, she discovers connections to the house’s past with the Salem trials and finds herself drawn into a struggle with supernatural events that she simply can’t explain. Nancy’s convictions are put to the test. Are the ghosts real? Has Salem’s dark history come to life, or is there someone else to blame? Time is short, and Nancy must find the answers before the clock strikes midnight.

Insights

Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem stands out from the rest of the games because it tackles a dark history of Salem that includes witchcraft and the supernatural. It's definitely a story I want to face head on as a detective, at least in character in the game :)

Nancy Drew: Midnight In Salem
Empty street scene from Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem

From the title itself, I guess you'd be expecting a lot of night scenes throughout the game. It kind of gives you that Halloween feels that brings chills (and excitement) down your spine. I have to admit I haven't finished the game yet because my brain doesn't cooperate with me. The puzzles and riddles are quite a challenge for me. So if you think you can solve these kinds of brain teasers, then this is definitely for you.

My Love for Food

As always, food scenes from games or even in movies or TV series really catches my eye. I also love food scenes from anime shows because they really look realistic and it really waters my mouth. As for Midnight in Salem, here are some delicious-looking food shots taken from the game:

At the Cafe (Look at those gorgeous desserts!)

Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem - Baking
Baking Ingredients

I actually tried baking one of my favorite desserts inspired by Midnight in Salem.

My baking ingredients

The word, "midnight," gave me the idea of chocolate because they're both dark in color. I chose bittersweet chocolate because night times are always bittersweet - sometimes it gives you scary memories and sometimes, it gives you beautiful and fun ones like Trick or Treat :)

Chocolate mixing

As I was mixing the melted chocolate while making the chocolate mousse, I remembered how witches are portrayed in cartoons on how they make their potions - they stand in front of a giant iron pot where they combine all those weird ingredients and then mix it slowly while they do their sinister laugh.

Homemade chocolate mousse (before solving a case)

Homemade chocolate mousse (after solving a case!)

Just like the feeling after solving a very difficult case and also saving another person's life in the process, it's as delicious as eating a bittersweet chocolate mousse!

Chocolate mousse ingredients:

  • 500 grams bittersweet chocolate couverture
  • 300 grams heavy whipping cream
  • 5 grams instant coffee powder dissolved in
  • 10 grams hot water
  • 800 grams heavy whipping cream, chilled

For the topping, I just used whipped cream in can (just spray as much as you want), choco cereal (best alternative is choco shavings or choco sprinkles), and an Oreo cookie.

Instructions:
1. Chop the bittersweet chocolate couverture and place in a large bowl. Make sure they're small enough so they can melt easily when heated.
2. Combine heavy whipping cream and coffee solution in a heavy saucepan and bring to boiling point over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
3. Pour hot cream mixture over chopped chocolate in a bowl. Allow to stand for a minute or two, then stir mixture until smooth and glossy. Cool to room temperature.
4. Place chilled heavy whipping cream in a mixer bowl. Whip cream to medium peak stage.
5. Gently place scoops of whipped cream into chocolate mixture
6. You can place the mousse into goblets or glasses (entirely up to you). Chill for at least 4 hours to set the mousse.

Nachos with Corned Beef: Dish Inspired By a Nancy Drew Mystery Game (Plus a Game Code Giveaway)

COVID-19 pandemic has really made us all home bound, but for good reasons. Staying at home helps stop the virus from spreading so it's the least we can do as good citizens. Staying at home for a long time does make life mentally challenging, though, but don't let it stop you from stimulating your mind!

Do you remember Nancy Drew? Yup, the popular mystery series that everyone in my school was talking about back in the 90s! I actually lost touch about its development when I reached college. Now, I'm surprised and excited to know that Nancy Drew has actually evolved into mystery PC games! You can now enjoy and experience what's it like for Nancy to solve mysteries.

Where Do I Buy Groceries Online During ECQ (Extended Community Quarantine)

Believe it or not, I haven't left my house since March 2020 due to the threat of COVID-19. There are plenty of people living in our house; two of them are my kids and one is my mom who is a senior citizen so I chose to stay indoors no matter what it takes.

Do you fall into #MalnutritionTraps?

The country has been facing the rise on the number of underweight and overweight Filipinos for more than 20 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined this phenomenon as the “Double Burden of Malnutrition” or the “prevalence of both under nutrition and overweight in the same community, nation, or region.”

To address this problem, our government launched the PinggangPinoy® campaign in 2014. PinggangPinoy® is an easy-to-understand food guide showing proper food group portioning on a per-meal basis. This reflects the principles of MOderation, VAriety and BAlance (MOVABA) to promote healthier eating habits.

Solving the Philippines’ Double Burden of Malnutrition should be a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors as it is not an easy feat. With this, Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation partnered with government agencies to conduct education programs to raise awareness and promote the practice of Pinggang Pinoy® in malnutrition hotspots, where incidences of Double Burden Malnutrition are high. This training was given to homemakers/mothers who have malnourished (underweight, stunting, wasting, overweight and obese) school-aged children.

The pilot run resulted to improvements of the knowledge & attitudes of households related to the practice of Pinggang Pinoy® within target areas. However, behavior changes towards healthier eating habits remains to be a challenge. The program uncovered a number #MalnutritionTraps that some Pinoy households easily fall into. The following #MalnutritionTrapsprovide a picture of how unhealthy eating habits may lead to Double Burden of Malnutrition:

1. Over consumption of carbohydrates: Voracious rice eaters can easily fill half of their plates with rice. Others have pandesal & noodles as regular meal deprived of other nutrients derived from a well-balanced meal.
2. Under consumption of vegetables and/fruits: It is common for some to be content with rice & meat to satisfy their hunger and skip/take insufficient amount of vegetables/fruits.Fact is, the variety of colors found in Glow foods are important sources of vitamins & minerals to sustain our energy &keep us from getting sick.
3. Overconsumption of protein: Typical Filipino “SILOG” meals include double serving of proteins (e.g. Tapa+Itlog, Tocino+Itlog, Longanisa+Itlog, Bangus+Itlog). Eating different kinds of protein is fine for as long as they are taken in moderation. We must also avoid protein dishes served high in fat, cholesterol and sodium.

As we were strolling inside the S Maison mall (inside Conrad Hotel), we saw the Olivia and Co., a casual restaurant located in between the walkway at the 2nd floor near the movie houses. We had no plans dining there, but the food smelled really good as we passed by so we decided to stay and dine.

It was going to be our first time to dine in at Brooklyn so I was quite excited.

Baga Manila in BF Homes

I was doing some errands with my little tot and I saw lots of stalls outside Tropical Hut along Aguirre Avenue. I found out that the organization behind this little food celebration is Baga Manila. They've also organized lots of grilling events namely in Lakefront, Laguna, Daang Hari, QC just to name a few. I got curious with what they had to offer so I checked out some of the stalls.

Our Sunday Buffet Dinner at The Pantry

Last year, we had the opportunity to eat a wonderful buffet breakfast at Dusit's all-day dining restaurant, Basix. But now, Basix no longer exists as they replaced it with a new restaurant called "The Pantry." Luckily, I still have my free buffet dinner voucher good for 2 from my Dusit Wine & Dine membership so we had the chance to discover what The Pantry offers for simple diners like us. Without the voucher, a dinner for two would cost us around Php2,800. Kids 5 years and below eat for free.

S&R New York Style Hawaiian Pizza and Birthday Cakes

My sister, me and my kids went to S&R Alabang last night to grab a few groceries. My son was quite hungry so we ate at the food station first. Hawaiian pizza is his favorite so I was quite worried about whether he would like the S&R pizza because I know they don't have Hawaiian. But alas! By some miracle, there is now!

S&R Hawaiian Pizza with bacon
We were so excited to try it and so we ordered a whole box for take out & a slice for my son for dine-in.
Price: P589 for the whole box /  P99 per slice

S&R Hawaiian Pizza with bacon
New York pizza indeed with pineapples and quite a generous amount of bacon strips (not bits). The only difference between the typical Hawaiian pizza and this one is that this doesn't have ham. They used bacon instead of ham which is all right with me. The whole pizza did not last until midnight when we went home. It's really good.
Strawberry Smoothie drink
We also ordered a strawberry smoothie worth P99.
Big serving and very yummy, too.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, that we're stuffed, we decided to finally do some groceries. While we were strolling around, I found these cute ready-made birthday cakes at reasonable prizes! I just thought I'd share it for you to see.

christmas decors
My kids enjoying the fake snow made of Styrofoam  ^_^
S&R has lovely Christmas decors and gifts already available for sale.

So that's the highlight of our trip to S&R Alabang. They also have some imported candies, chocolates, and even cookies specially made for Halloween! So I do recommend you visit the place if you have the time. If you're from the south and if you only want to eat their pizza, their food store is also available in Festival Mall, Alabang so you can order their delicious New York style pizzas there.

Reminder: S&R requires membership before doing any groceries so you need to become a member and pay the P700 membership fee.

Delightful Treats from Chips Delight

Chips Delight has been a part of our family for a long, long time. I remember munching on them when I was still in college because I just love their cookies! My favorite Chips Delight flavor is their original chocolate chip cookies partnered with chilled milk. Now that I have kids, it's not hard for them to love Chips Delight because one bite of their cookie and they just can't get enough of it.

This is a pic of our stocked food when we checked in a hotel in Makati just this summer.
I really made sure we have Chips Delight to make our stay more delightful.
So since I love Chips Delight, I was actually thrilled that they were one of the sponsors in Blogapalooza 2015. I was really eager to see what they had in store for bloggers like me.

Luckily, as I went and entered the venue, theirs was one of the first booths I saw so it's the first booth I went to. All the staff greeted me and took my picture below as I was holding Chips Delight's fan sign.

Their booth really looked festive ^_^
After taking a picture, they gave me a pack of their new flavor, The Chips Delight Chocolate Chip Brittle Brownie. I decided to take this home and let the delight reach my kids. :)

The resealable lock makes it more convenient to bring whenever and wherever we travel.
And so when I went home, my kids got excited to see the pack. They knew it was Chips Delight right away because of the familiar logo. We all ate it right away as a snack. My little girl even asked for some chilled milk which was a great idea.

A close up photo of the cookie.
The cookie was actually a bit more brittle, thinner, and not as chewy unlike the other flavors that we usually buy, but it's still a winner in our list. It's more crunchy and it did resemble the flavors of brittle brownies, which is why the pack didn't last for more than 5 minutes :)

Chips Delight offers plenty of other delicious flavors such as :
  1. Soft Brownie cookies (family favorite)
  2. Peanut and Caramel Chip cookies (my brother's favorite)
  3. Coffee caramel chip cookies (my other sister's favorite)
  4. Striped chocolate cookies (family favorite)
  5. Striped Cappuccino chocolate chip cookies (my personal favorite)
  6. Rainbow candy cookies (great for kiddie parties)
Mini Chips Delight Butter Oatmeal Choco Chip CookiesThis party pack is best suited for sharing :)
For a more nutritious treat, I also buy the Mini Chips Delight Butter Oatmeal Choco Chip cookies for my son's baon for school. It's definitely a delicious way to add a bit of fiber to my son's snacks :D The smaller packs has a very budget-friendly price of P11.00 each.

----------------------------------------------------------
Here are some new flavors of Chips Delight :
Chips Delight Triple Chocolate Overload Cookies
I think this would be an awesome treat during the Holidays to make it extra special, don't you think? :) I'm sure my kids would be delighted to see this.

Chips Delight Chocolate Chip Cookies (No Sugar Added)
I think this is best for adults like me and for those who are health-conscious This is definitely good news to us because we can enjoy the same old Chips Delight goodness without the guilt.

So there you have it. Chips Delight has lots of flavors to choose from that suits  every individual's taste and you can definitely expect that their cookies are reasonably priced catered for everyone's budget. I make sure I always have stocks of Chips Delight at home so my kids always have something delicious to munch on any time of the day.

Buffet Breakfast at Basix 2015

Buffet Breakfast at Basix Dusit Hotel Makati

As we availed the "Weekend Prince and Princess" rate, it already includes a buffet breakfast for two so I'm quite excited about what Basix restaurant has to offer. Children ages 5 and below can eat for free!

Vikings Luxury Buffet at SM BF Paranaque

Yesterday, my husband treated me to Vikings BF Paranaque because it was my birthday! Well, he only had to pay for himself because I ate for free because it's my birth date, but I don't mind at all.

We were greeted by this gentleman on the right asking if we have reservations. You bet we do! I also indicated on the phone when I called that it was my birthday. So when everything was arranged, he summoned another guy whom I forgot the name and he was told to get my ID card for verification.  Well, the guy did assisted us towards our table, but he seemed to forget to collect my ID.
